March 28, Stumbled on Qoyllur Rit'i Photos
2015-06-08
In Peru, the ancient ceremony of Qoyllur Rit'i occurs in the high mountains above 16,000 feet. Participants climb up to the flanks of the Apu Colquepunko near Ausangate. These photos by Andean photographer Martin Chambri and Eirik Johnson show the celebrants in the 1930s climbing to the glacier, the Snow Star (Qoyllur Rit'i). Due to climate change, the glacier has retreated further up the mountain as it melts, meaning today the Qeros do not bring back ice from the sacred glacier.
I stumbled upon these photos in a show on climate change.
The people are just little specks at the edge of the glacier.
Grateful to see these images.
